the below on school closure and re-opening will be relevant for many of you in contexts where COVID-19 prevention measures affecting schools have been enforced. 

As many countries begin to think about lifting restrictions, the question of when to reopen schools is becoming more prominent. To explore the topic, the Alliance for Child Protection in Humanitarian Action and the Inter-agency Network for Education in Emergencies (INEE) have released a new policy paper: Weighing Up the Risks: School Closure and Re-opening Under COVID-19 – When, Why, and What Impacts? This paper argues that the decision for school closure/reopening should be made contextually, with due consideration of risks and benefits from CP, education and health perspectives. An accompanying Blog Post has also been produced. This policy paper complements other existing guidance on safe reopening of schools, such as the Framework for Reopening Schools, and Safe Back to School: A Practitioner’s Guide, by focusing on the question of why and when to open schools.

 

 

An Evidence Synthesis on the Impact of School Closures on Children's Protection and Wellbeing is also now available (as part of the Alliance evidence synthesis series).

I think it would be useful if coming versions of this guidance also factors in their analysis potential risks and benefits for the wider community when schools are open or closed. For example, what are the chances that an infected 17 years old transmits the virus to his circle of friends and family when schools are open? Or how are parents capacity to work and families' livelihoods impacted when schools are closed?

On the other hand, also good to mention that different measures might also apply to different school levels as the effects and the risk analysis also changes with the age of children...
